Great news for vegans and those who are lactose intolerant: Ben & Jerry’s has heard the scream for plant-based ice cream and is soon to release its first dairy-free soft serve.

In an exclusive interview with metro.co.uk, the co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, Jerry Greenfield, said the team is diligently working on a ‘delicious’ dairy-free ice cream. This news comes shortly after the beloved ice cream company humorously stated its intentions to deliver marijuana-infused ice cream if cannabis becomes legal in the future.

Instead of cow’s milk, which more often than not (unless certified organic) comes from cows fed less-than-optimal diets and treated with synthetic hormones and antibiotics, the company will be using coconut milk or almond milk as the base for the new frozen sweet treat.

After a petition was created by a couple from Charlottesville urging Ben & Jerry’s to produce a dairy-free ice cream, the company agreed to make many peoples’ sweet dreams come true.

The co-founder hopes it will mean a lot to those who cannot consume dairy.

Said Jerry: “I think that’s a big thing for Ben & Jerry’s to be doing that. In the US, there are (dairy free) alternatives from smaller companies, but Ben & Jerry’s will be [the] first mainstream company that will do that and will also do it in a really delicious way.”

A bounty of delicious dairy-free ice creams do already exist, but Ben & Jerry’s new spin on everyone’s favorite treat will most likely be available in the US next year (2016) in the spring. It will be made available a little later in the UK.
