Acne might be unbecoming and painful, but approximately 80% of the population will experience outbreaks of inflammatory pustules on their skin sometime in their lifetimes, most likely between the ages of 11 and 30. Those who have suffered from the skin affliction – or still do – know the pain that can accompany the condition.

Cystic acne especially can leave one feeling vulnerable and ugly. In effect, it is not uncommon from sufferers to experience decreased self-esteem. For UK pageant finalist Rachel Crawley, severe, cystic acne was the bane of her existence. She wrote on Instagram that before she healed her skin, she was constantly bullied and hid at home as a result. Even though she desired to enter a beauty pageant at age 18, she was too embarrassed and self-conscious, therefore, forewent the opportunity.

Like millions around the world, she had tried her fair share of pills, potions, and creams to heal her skin. What made all the difference, however, was a change to her diet. Reportedly, after adopting a vegan (meat, dairy and animal product-free) diet, her skin cleared up dramatically. Now 22-years-old, she wants to inspire and encourage others to heal themselves by eschewing animal products and consuming more nutrient-dense, fiber-filled foods.

The administrative assistant relayed in one of her posts that she had to learn to love herself before she cared enough to improve her diet. She wrote:

“The reason I decided to accept myself for how I looked is because for years I suffered with acne and for years I let my mental health take over, ruin relationships, stop me going out ect all because I was insecure and worried about other people’s opinions. Because let’s be honest acne isn’t nice to look at. I knew I couldn’t carry on being this hard on myself to the point I would cry and have a lot of built up stress causing headaches. I thought about the days when I used to have no worries when I was younger and here’s what I came up with- I wasn’t living life trying to impress anyone I wore no makeup so never felt less beautiful I didn’t spend my time trying to make myself look perfect I didn’t sit at home comparing myself to others on Instagram It’s the world we live in today that makes us think like this..”

She now consumes a high-fat vegan diet, as trial and error helped her discover that she is insulin resistant and, therefore, breaks out when eating too much sugar and refined carbohydrates.

“Only for about 3 days I have stopped eating these foods and upped my fat intake (healthy fats) and guess what? No new breakouts!” she wrote on Instagram.

The brave girl also uses a minimal skin care routine to help her body heal from the inside out.

Because Crawley dared to share her story and inspire other teens and young women to confidence, she is now competing as a finalist in the UK’s Miss Preston’s 2017 pageant. We wish her all the best, as she is living proof that diet does matter when it comes to healing modern-day afflictions, such as acne.
