Awesome: Using Worms To Purify Waste Water

Hundreds of thousands of worms in sawdust and wood chips are used to purify waste water in a pilot program by Bio Filtro at Fresno State’s Water, Energy and Technology Center (WET).

This technique is gaining popularity as a natural, comparatively cheap and very effective way to turn waste into renewable water. Sewage and other waste water is added to a large bed of natural materials teeming with red worms and bacteria. The little guys get to work and within four hours, clean water exits at the other end to be used for irrigation. Nature really can take care of everything…
