According to Australian Renewable Energy Agency CEO Ivor Frischknecht, the CETO 5 system is “The first array of wave power generators to be connected to an electricity grid in Australia and worldwide.”
This is not just a great idea, it is already a reality, and has been providing areas of Australia with clean energy for nearly a month now.
The CETO 5 works by using a set of submerged buoys and water pumps. When the current moves the buoys, the force then activates the pumps, and pushes pressurized water through turbines.
There are currently plans in motion for a CETO 6 project, which is expected to generate four times as much energy as the CETO 5.
“The great thing about it is we know it works. The challenge from here on is really about scale and cost,” Carnegie Wave Energy CEO Michael Ottaviano told The West Australian.
