Even though temperatures are below 0 degrees F in North Dakota, activists in support of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s plight remain camped out near Cannon Ball. They continue to brave the winter weather to prevent the four-state Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) from being constructed. Supporters of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, which maintains that the land the pipeline crosses infringes upon territory promised to them in an 1851 treaty, are concerned that the DAPL’s development will potentially contaminate the Missouri river, as well as uproot sacred burial ground. It’s because of this they remain on the plains, where many have set up camp since April of 2016.
In recent weeks, there was plenty of news about the thousands of veterans who arrived at camp to shield “water protectors” on the front lines. Since then, however, news concerning Standing Rock has lessened dramatically. Even though one doesn’t hear much about the issue at present, you can bet thousands are still camped out in dangerous conditions, however.
To raise awareness about the indigenous peoples’ cause, as well as to boycott the United States’ President-elect Donald Trump, artist Fiona Apple recently performed at a benefit in Los Angeles and didn’t hold back with her “Christmas Song” parody “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire”. Rolling Stone reports that the “We Rock With Standing Rock” benefit concert took place at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre on Sunday.
In a jazzy, live version of her controversial song, Apple swapped the lyrics to Bob Wells and Mel Tormé’s holiday treat with her own remarks. She sang,
“Everybody knows some money and entitlement/ Can help to make the season white. Mothers of color with their kids out of sight/ Will find it hard to sleep at night.”
Reportedly, the set was ended with Apple screaming out, “Donald Trump, fuck you!”
