An Ideal “Wall” For The US-Mexico Border Proposed By Scientists That Even Mexico Will Appreciate

There have been many criticisms about the “wall” on the U.S.-Mexico border that President Donald Trump is adamant at erecting. There are always two sides to a coin, but it seems more to appear to lean towards the negative. Some consider it the most grandiose and probably the most unnecessary policy ever pursued in US history.

There are seven reasons for this:

  1. First of all, the number of undocumented people living in the US is at its lowest point in the last 10 years. Mexican or otherwise.
  2. Just to clarify a fact, about 40% of these illegal immigrants came to the US via airplane, no wall will control that.
  3. Most of the unauthorized immigrants came over legally and just overstayed their visas.
  4. Undocumented people actually cause less crime than Americans, they obviously don’t want to draw attention to themselves.
  5. Illegal border crossings was at a 46-year low in 2017.
  6. Most illegal and dangerous drugs do not even come across the southern border.
  7. Lastly, the idea of building a wall across the border is a tremendous waste of taxpayer dollars.

But Trump and his supporters still want their wall. Seems useless to argue the point now, but some suggestions can be made to make the “wall” a more beneficial structure rather than a symbol of radical border politics.

A group of about 28 engineers from a dozen universities have come up with a brilliant idea. They came up with a plan that could provide alternative energy sources, by creating a 2000 mile-long industrial park on the US-Mexico border. This would include solar energy panels, wind turbines, desalination plants, and natural gas pipelines, among other things. Definitely it will have state-of-the-art and heavy security to make sure that no one dares cross the border with a load of illegal drugs.

The consortium released a paper that shows that the border area is actually an ideal location for generating alternative energy, as most of it lies in arid or semi-arid regions that have a high solar irradiation and wind. And, the amount of solar energy production would be equal to the hydropower production along the U.S.-Canada border, roughly the same amount generated by a nuclear plant, without the negatives to consider.

Luciano Castillo, a Purdue University professor of energy and power, and the leader of the group, believes that their plan would be a win-win situation for the US and Mexico. Well it is definitely worth studying, and much better than the wall Trump has in mind. Hopefully he will keep an open mind.
