When most people see a shark – whether it be in a marine park or in the ocean, they quickly turn and run the other way. Two friends who live in Florida, however, didn’t hesitate before assisting a shark when they heard it flailing in the waves.

Colin Baker and his acquaintance Adam were chatting, fishing, and enjoying the weather on Jensen Beach when they overheard someone talking about a distressed shark flopping in the waves. With little reservation, they approached it to help.

Upon inspecting the creature, they discovered that the shark was tangled in fishing wire with a hook caught in its mouth. Moving quickly, the duo unraveled the write then carefully pulled the hook from the beast’s mouth. Then, the shark was released back into the ocean where it disappeared.

Too often, it seems, humans exploit animals – especially when they are distressed – to take ‘selfies’ and pictures to impress others on social media. While the event was captured on film, it’s clear when watching the footage that Colin and Adam were most focused on aiding the shark. The world needs more activists like them.
