What sets ordinary people apart from those who might be deemed ‘great’ is the relentless effort they invest in achieving their goals. By this definition, a 15-year-old ballerina named Gabi Shull great, as well as an inspiration to countless individuals.

When Shull was just nine years old, she fell while ice-skating and injured her knee. After weeks of bruising and swelling, she finally went to the hospital for an X-ray and, later, was delivered the news that she had bone cancer.

At this point, the young athlete thought her ballet career was over. But doctors recommended an uncommon solution, and this is what has allowed her to continue dancing. After removing her knee joint, surgeons rotated her foot a full 180 degrees and rejoined it to her leg, allowing it to function like a knee.

Having a foot sticking out of where her knee joint used to be might seem weird, but it’s what allows her to flex her prosthetic leg and, in effect, continue to dance. Gabs told People:

“It’s a unique surgery. Not for everybody, but it was worth it for me.”

It’s been five years since Gabs received the revolutionary surgery, and as you can see below, she’s thriving as a dancer. She now takes pointe, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary, and jazz dance classes and even partakes in competitions. Additionally, she’s also a national spokesperson for The Truth 365 and is an advocate for kids who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Her mom, Debbie Shull, told the press:

“This is everything she would have done if she had not had cancer. She’s just living her life as if this didn’t happen.”

Following are some photos of the inspiring dancer:
