Pastor From North Carolina’s City Church Helps Raise Thousands To Pay Off Cafeteria Lunch Debt

Scene7

A pastor from North Carolina has been doing an amazing job helping children in need in his home county. Regardless of the need, whether clothes, housing, or even a family, with the programs from his City Church, such as the Foster and Adoption Ministry.

Just a few years back, the church – located in Gastonia – began what they call the Hope Closet. This happens to be a clothing giveaway program for kids who may be displaced, or even those kids in schools that lack such items as new shoes.

But it would seem that Pastor Dickie Spargo, who heads City Church, wasn’t satisfied with all the ways they were already helping. When he came upon a new article about the continuous number of children whose school lunch accounts remained unpaid, he felt a stirring to do something for them.

Many districts in North Carolina, including Gaston County, suffer from issues with school lunch debt. In fact, Pastor Spargo learned that the unpaid debt from their county alone was $13,000 in total.

Spargo explained to the local media, “We decided that we were going to share it with our church, and then just take up an offering and see what would happen.”

But what he didn’t expect was the overwhelming response that the church received from a number of very willing and generous churchgoers. In less than two weeks, the pastor shared that their congregation had raised a whopping $23,000.

After he delivered the check to the county to pay off the lunch debt, Pastor Spargo told the congregation, “What a great opportunity to bless these kids.”

He also found out that many of the schools are “doing their best” to reach out to parents to urge them to apply for what’s known as the ‘free or reduced lunch program.’ This program is used by the government to reimburse the costs of meals that would otherwise be charged to the school.

Incredibly, City Church’s large donation of $23,000 will not only pay off the student lunch debt for this year, but it will also help to pay off the debt for the upcoming school year.

Pastor Spargo could only proclaim one thing, “Praise God!” And after all that this has done to help the children and parents in need,  praise God indeed.

And again, Spargo isn’t done just yet. He also plans to reach out to the state legislatures of North Carolina to find ways to help combat this ongoing issue.

He told the local media as well, “There is no reason why a child in North Carolina should go without a hot meal. How can you learn on an empty stomach?”
