Did you know? Approximately 13 percent of people over the age of 80 suffer from the effects of dementia. The affliction is actually an umbrella term that covers a wide variety of degenerative brain diseases, including Alzheimer’s.

Dementia is hard to the patient and the family. To the elderly individual, it may seem as if they’ve lost their mind — on the occasions they remember most of their life in clarity. To their family, the ordeal can be downright heartbreaking due to obvious reasons.

To help patients with dementia better acclimate to life in a retirement home, a senior citizen home in Yorkshire, England, recreated street scenes from the past. The hope is to make the residents feel more comfortable and at home.

Said Laurence Garton, Development Director of Yorkare:

“We put in lots of different reminiscence shop fronts to act as areas of interest and discussion. This encourages families and residents to talk about their memories.”

Metro reports that this care home is intended to invigorate residents by helping them relive “the good ol’ days.” Elderly patients are encouraged to be active and live out their days similarly to how they would do so at home. “We try to create as many different areas within the Home that allow the residents to do what they always would’ve done and for their visitors to be involved with them,” said Garton.

In total, the luxurious senior citizen home has 78 rooms. However, they don’t come cheap. One week — all inclusive — is about £700. If one has done well in life and can afford the accommodation, however, it is sure to ease the pain that can accompany degenerative brain illnesses, such as dementia.
