Study Shows That Diet Soda Makes You Gain Belly Fat Faster Than Regular Soda

soda-466542_640New research has shown that diet soda is actually responsible for more weight problems than regular soda.

According to the recent San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging, daily drinkers of diet soda put on three times as much belly fat, on average, than people who drink regular soda on a daily basis.

The study was conducted with 750 test subjects, each aged 65 years or older, with careful consideration to factors such as age, smoking and general health.

The researchers discovered that over the course of a decade, those test subjects that did not drink diet soda gained .77 cm in belly fat, while occasional drinkers gained 2.11 and daily drinkers gained 3.04.

As we reported last month, since the start of the year, a number of major fast food chains have announced that they will be removing soda as an option from their kids meals. This move is in an effort to meet a market demand for healthier options, as fast food restaurants have seen falling profits in recent years, and consumers have become more health conscious.
