Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund Headed By A Grade-Schooler

WRAL

The geographical chasm between the bean fields and mountains of North Carolina and the distant shores of Hawai’i, spanning five time zones and over 5,000 miles, seems insurmountable. Yet, in the face of such vast distances, the resolve and dedication of youth stand as a beacon of inspiration.

At just 11 years old, Harrison Johnson of North Carolina has exemplified this spirit by raising an impressive $81,000 to support historical initiatives commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor. Through grassroots efforts such as door-to-door canvassing, selling patriotic popsicles, and engaging in public speaking events – all led by Harrison himself – this young boy has made a significant impact.

But what ignited this fervent patriotism in Harrison, who had never set eyes on the iconic harbor of Oahu? The seeds were sown during a school history project where Harrison became captivated by the intricacies of the event. His fascination led him to delve deeper, immersing himself in books, archived newspaper accounts, and conversations with survivors of the attack.

A pivotal moment came with a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, where Harrison’s sense of duty was galvanized. Inspired to ensure that the sacrifices of the heroes and victims of that fateful day endure, Harrison initiated his fundraising campaign, aptly named “Harrison’s Heroes.”

The objective of “Harrison’s Heroes” is clear: to raise $100,000 for Pacific Historic Parks, the nonprofit organization entrusted with the stewardship of the Pearl Harbor memorial. Harrison’s vision extends beyond mere remembrance; he seeks to enrich the narrative by spotlighting the heroic deeds of men and women of color and other marginalized groups who played vital roles but often go unrecognized.

In Harrison Johnson, we witness the remarkable power of passion and determination transcending physical boundaries and generations. His story serves as a reminder that even the youngest among us can make an indelible mark on history through unwavering commitment and a steadfast belief in the power of remembrance and inclusivity.

“We’re so proud and we pray it makes the impact that he intends,” Harrison’s mom shared.
