Dr. Ruth Gottesman, widow of the late ‘Sandy’ Gottesman, inherited a staggering sum of $1 billion, sourced from her husband’s successful investments, notably in Berkshire Hathaway. However, rather than hoard this immense wealth for personal gain, Dr. Gottesman chose to exemplify the epitome of altruism and generosity.

Her decision was nothing short of remarkable. She directed this substantial inheritance towards a cause close to her heart – education. Specifically, she elected to pay forward the tuition fees of deserving students at a medical school situated in the Bronx, exemplifying her commitment to fostering the next generation of medical professionals.

The announcement of Dr. Gottesman’s philanthropic gesture reverberated through the halls of Albert Einstein Medical College, evoking a profound mix of cheers and tears among its faculty, students, and staff. The magnitude of her contribution is unparalleled, marking it as the largest endowment ever bestowed upon an American medical school. Moreover, it stands as one of the most significant philanthropic acts in the history of American higher education.

Dr. Gottesman’s generosity transcends mere financial assistance. By alleviating the burden of tuition fees for aspiring medical students, she not only enables them to pursue their dreams but also ensures that the medical field benefits from a diverse array of talented individuals, irrespective of their financial backgrounds. In doing so, she perpetuates a legacy of compassion and service that embodies the essence of humanitarianism.

Dr. Ruth Gottesman’s philanthropy serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, illuminating the path towards a brighter future for both the medical community and society at large. Her profound impact resonates far beyond the walls of Albert Einstein Medical College, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of American education and the human spirit.]

“This donation radically revolutionizes our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it,”  Dean Yaron Tomer shared.

Through this generous donation, all fourth-year students currently enrolled will receive reimbursement for their tuition fees for the spring semester of 2024. Additionally, commencing August of this year, all future students will benefit from tuition-free education.

“I am very thankful to my late husband, Sandy, for leaving these funds in my care, and l feel blessed to be given the great privilege of making this gift to such a worthy cause,” Ruth Gottesman said in a statement she recently made.

Dr. Gottesman began her journey at Einstein’s Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC) in 1968, eventually rising to the esteemed position of Clinical Professor Emerita of Pediatrics.

During an era when learning difficulties often went undetected or were wrongly diagnosed, Dr. Gottesman pioneered the development of screening, evaluation, and treatment methods that have positively impacted the lives of countless children. Her groundbreaking work has helped tens of thousands of young individuals navigate and overcome their challenges.

In 1992, recognizing the ongoing need for support beyond childhood, Dr. Gottesman established the Adult Literacy Program at CERC, marking a significant milestone as the first initiative of its kind. This program continues to operate, providing invaluable assistance to adults seeking to enhance their literacy skills and empowering them to lead more fulfilling lives.

Following the passing of her cherished friend Sandy, a thoughtful gesture left Dr. Gottesman with a portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway stock and entrusted her with the decision on its use.

In honoring Sandy’s memory and trust, Dr. Gottesman reflects on her decision with the hope that Sandy, wherever he may be, looks upon it favorably. It’s a testament to their bond and the impact they both strive to make in the world.
