#TrekNotTrump urges citizens to cast their vote for Hillary Clinton, rather than support a racist, misogynistic candidate like Donald Trump.
Donald Trump is not a widely liked man, quite simply for the fact that he’s said a number of sexist, bigoted, racist, and discriminative remarks in the past year alone. In fact, his behavior toward minorities and women have been so brash, it’s prompted 70+ cast and crew members of Star Trek to write the Republican presidential candidate a sobering letter.
The letter includes support from writers, actors, directors, and producers spanning across 50 years of the “Star Trek” franchise, and their message is clear: Trump’s unapologetic, misogynistic and racist behavior is to not be tolerated.
The letter, posted on Facebook, reads:
“We cannot turn our backs on what is happening in the upcoming election. Never has there been a presidential candidate who stands in such complete opposition to the ideals of the Star Trek universe as Donald Trump.”
J.J. Abrams (director of the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot), Scott Bakula (the captain from “Star Trek: Enterprise”), and Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry (son of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry) were but a few of the many who signed the letter.
One of the main points in the letter appeals to U.S. citizens, urging them to get out and vote this November election. Rather than oppose Hillary Clinton, too, for her conspicuous dealings, supporters of the letter express favor toward the former Secretary of State.
The letter continues:
“The resolution of conflicts on Star Trek was never easy. Don’t remain aloof –vote! We have heard people say they will vote Green or Libertarian or not at all because the two major candidates are equally flawed. That is both illogical and inaccurate. Either Secretary Clinton or Mr. Trump will occupy the White House. One is an amateur with a contemptuous ignorance of national laws and international realities, while the other has devoted her life to public service, and has deep and valuable experience with the proven ability to work with Congress to pass desperately needed legislation. If, as some say, the government is broken, a protest vote will not fix it.”
The Star Trek franchise has long valued diversity, multiculturalism, and tolerance – the opposite of what Trump proposes with banning Muslims from the U.S. and building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. For this reason, it’s an understatement to say Trump’s ideals are in complete contrast to the Star Trek universe.
As Bryan Fuller – who is spearheading the new “Star Trek” TV series “Star Trek: Discovery” – says, Trump and his policies will not pave the way for Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future.
