A six-year-old little boy wanted to help his animal friends in Australia that he is raising money for them all by himself. In order to raise money for the Australian wildlife, he’s making small koala bears out of clay and donating all the proceeds.

It really upset Owen Colley from Hingham, Massachusetts to learn that the Australian bushfires are destroying homes and killing over 500 million animals. He asked his mother Caitlin Colley if there were any animals that were hurt in the fire, and she answered honestly. Saddened about this new information, he left the room and began drawing a photo of a kangaroo, koala and dingo all under the rain. Owen’s mother said that his drawn photo was a wish for rain and wildfire relief in Australia.

“It was really the first time Owen had made a wish for something other than Lego or something other than himself,” Caitlin Colley told CNN last week. “We asked him if he wanted to help and … together we came up with this. We could make some clay koalas and give them in response to donations from friends and family.”

After that, Owen started making small gray koalas from clay while his parents set up a manner on how the buyers would be able to donate to the one of the wildlife rescue groups in New South Wales called Wildlife Rescue South Coast. For every person that donates $50 or more to this non-profit, the Colley family will gift them one koala. Owen has already made 55.

As of January 14, his mom said that Owen and his clay koalas have raised over $20,000 for the rescue group. After only a week of starting this idea, they already received $1,000 in donations from Venmo via an Instagram post. Their fundraising idea got so much traction that the family started a GoFundMe campaign.

According to the ecologists in University of Sydney, more than 500 million animals have been injured, burnt and killed by the wildfires in Australia. Among those affected are reptiles, mammals and birds that are indigenous to the country.

This sweet little boy wants everyone all across the world to know about Australia and its animals. He said:

“I want them to know more about Australia and I want them to know more about what animals are in Australia.”

For a kindergartner, his knowledge of Australian animals is a lot, and he can prove it. He knows about these animals: Tasmanian devil, kangaroo, wombat, kookaburra and koala.
