On March 28, 2001, Jill Wells, her husband, Mike, and their son, Tanner, 6, went on a shooting trip at a ranch Mike and his friends had been renting.With his father’s permission, Tanner picked up his dad’s gun to shoot some paper targets. But when the boy pulled the trigger, his mom, Jill, suddenly fell on the ground with a gunshot wound to her head. Moments later, Jill was dead.

Jill Evenson was the daughter of a Lutheran minister, Rev. Walter Evenson, and his wife, Joyce, a school teacher. Jill was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, but spent most of her childhood in Stover, a small town in Missouri with only 1,000 people, where his minister father was heading a small local church. Growing up, Jill spent most of her time at church and at school.
