Okay, when you get the chance to glimpse a panda and cake in the same portrait, you know it’s going to be a good day.
This isn’t just any panda, however. The beloved panda featured is named Jia Jia, and she just celebrated her 37th birthday at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park. In fact, she set the Guinness World Records for being the “oldest panda ever in captivity,” as well as the “oldest panda living in captivity.”
While this might not seem like much to celebrate – it is! Jia Jia is now the equivalent of 110 in human years, and she still has a bright future ahead of her.
Previously, the oldest panda in captivity was Dudu, born in 1962. He lived until 1999 and made it to 36-years-old. Because in captivity the average panda only lives to 18-20 years, both pandas’ lifespans are impressive.
So, of course, it’s only right she – and all those who look after her – celebrated the monumental day in style. In the photos, you can see Jia Jia digging into a special cake the park made for her.
The masterpiece is made out of ice and vegetables. But, as might be expected, the Granny was more interested in her favorite food – bamboo! To heck with man-made concoctions…
Born in 1978, the elder panda was gifted to Hong Kong in 1999 to celebrate the second anniversary of Britain handing over control of the city to China. Throughout her long life, Jia Jia has given birth to six cubs, four of which are still alive and well.
