A tiny, four-year-old girl went to extreme lengths to fetch help for her dying grandmother. Even though temperatures were as low as -34°C, she walked four kilometers through forests which are home to wolves, bears and other predators to find help for her sick family member.

The Independent reports that the young girl — called Saglana — braved subzero temperatures as she moseyed through a frigid region in southern Russia. Reportedly, she had woken up and found her grandmother motionless. Afraid that her caretaker would die, she set off to find help. Despite Saglana’s good intention, her grandmother ended up passing away from a heart attack.

The four-year-old lived alone with her grandmother and blind grandfather. As a result, her mother now faces a criminal case brought by the Investigations Department of the Republic of Tuva, a federal subject of Russia which shares a border with China. The mother is accused of leaving a minor in danger. She also faces investigation from childcare and custody services. They will be asking the mother why Saglana was left alone with her relatives who were unfit to care for her.

According to the press, the journey took place in February. Russian reports on social media suggest the forest was as cold as -34°C during that time. The story is finally making headlines, as only recently was it confirmed by authorities.

When Saglana did wander back into civilization, she suffered from “general hypothermia.” Fortunately, she suffered no life-threatening effects. She is incredibly lucky to have survived, as the South Siberian forests are known to contain ferocious predators that wouldn’t have hesitated to rip her to bits. We are just glad that was not the case.
