A 3-year-old little boy went missing from his grandmother’s home last January while he was outside playing with two other children. He was eventually found about a mile and a half away a whole two days later within the North Carolina woods. Casey Hathaway was found in good conditions despite the fact that during the time of his disappearance, the weather conditions included heavy rains, strong wind and temperatures dipping as low into the 20’s. Casey told his grandmother that a bear protected him and kept him warm from the freezing weather the whole time he was lost.

“He didn’t say how he was able to survive and all that. He did say that he had a friend in the woods that was a bear that was with him,” Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes told reporters.“This kid was strong, he was meant to survive. … He’s got a story to tell.” He added.

Casey’s aunt, Breanna Hathaway, wrote about the bear that kept her nephew safe on a Facebook post that has already been deleted: “He said he hung out with a bear for two days. God sent him a friend to keep him safe. God is good God. Miracles do happen… We appreciate the thoughts but we do want to recognize that everyone wants to get Casey a stuff little bear and although we absolutely love that remember that he can only home so many.”

Immediately after Casey went missing, search teams in the surrounding counties started looking for him until he was eventually found by a woman who was out walking her dog. She reported hearing a little boy crying for his mother in the woods. The police soon found him about 50 yards within the woods, where he was caught in some vines and sticker bushes.

North Carolina experts said the bear that Casey claimed rescued him was most likely a black bear, which is the only species locally found in the state. According to the North Carolina Wildlife, as of 2012, there were about 17,000 of them living in that area. Black bears typical survive on a diet of grasses, roots, berries, nuts and insects, fish and small mammals. More often that not, this species of bears have no interest in engaging with people, nor are they known to attack humans.
