About 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every single day, which makes that about 1/3 of all the food that is produced for human consumption. Nearly $990 million dollars worth of food was wasted in 2018 alone. According to the World Vision, the United States wastes about 133 billion pounds of food a year, which is an equivalent to more that $161 billion in retail prices. All this wasted supply is enough to feed as many as 2 billion people that have no access to any farm to table produce or don’t have have the means to purchase it, making an approximate of 815 million people in underdeveloped countries undernourished.

With food demand having an expectation to rise by 70% in 2050, Achim Steiner, who is the U.N. under-secretary general and environment program executive director said that

“in a world of 7 billion people, set to grow to 9 billion by 2050, wasting food makes no sense — economically, environmentally, and ethically.”

So we give you three ingenious and innovative ways to stop wasting food and putting it to better use:

1. Using stale bread to make beer

‘Toast,’ a brewing company collects all unsold bread from bakeries and supermarkets and includes it in their hops, barley and yeast in their brews. Toast has brewed over 265,000 bottles and is available in 6 countries. Every beer contains a slice of bread.

2. Be aware of the ‘use before’ date of everything you shop for in the grocery

The Wasteless App is aimed for supermarkets and suppliers to categorize which of their products need to be sold sooner, rather than later. The prices of their products are adjusted in real time depending on their expiry date so that consumers end up saving if they buy food closer to this date. Retailers said that this system has made them cut out food waste by a third.

3. Consuming all fruits and vegetables, despite how they look

‘Ooze’ buys disproportionate fruits and veggies from local supermarkets that would’ve rejected the supply because of its appearance. They then turn the rejected produce into healthy smoothies.

What do you do to save food?
