Last Friday, a 23-year-old law student was at her house in the southern state of Kerala when a 54-year-old man allegedly tried to rape her. Reportedly, the man is considered to be a religious guru by her family. District police chief G Sparjan Kumar stated, “She used a knife in her defence and cut off his penis.”

Immediately after the incident, the man, Hari Swami, was rushed to a nearby hospital. According to chief Kumar, he was “in a serious state.” Not long afterward, local media reported that Swami was in a stable condition after undergoing emergency medical procedures at the hospital, reports The Telegraph.

The unnamed woman claims Swami had been assaulting her for several years. Apparently, she had finally had enough. A case against the “guru” has been filed for sexual offenses against a  minor and rape. Reportedly, the girl’s parents were unaware the man had been violating their daughter.

“The woman told us that her parents blindly trusted this Swami, and he used to get frequent invites to perform special ceremonies and stay over at their house, where he assaulted her,” said Kumar.

The woman is now under police protection and is receiving counseling.

In India, rape is the fourth most common crime against women. New Delhi, especially, has one of the highest rates of rape in the entire country. Because men are still deemed to be superior in Indian culture, many rapes go unreported or, are ignored by the family. Just last month, two nuns and a priest were arrested for covering up the birth of a baby born to a teenage girl, who was then raped by another priest. This took place in Kerala. In the same location, a priest was sentenced to 40 years in prison for raping a 12-year-old girl in 2014.
