The image above looks like a concept for a new dystopian sci-fi film, but it’s an actual shot of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, happily strolling past an audience engaged in a virtual reality. The shot was captured at the Mobile World Conference which took place in Barcelona, Spain.

It was after the tech genius posted the photo to his Facebook page, likely figuring it’d be a good look, that the semi-shocking photo went viral.

Internet users quickly noted the inherent creepiness and began combining it with movies, dinosaurs, and even the iconic Apple ad set in a similar-looking dystopian future.

As Twitter user Nicolas Debock pointed out, the picture might just be an allegory of our future: people distracted by technology while leaders walk past the majority.

We agree with Rich McCormick from Verge, who accurately summarized the scene:

“The picture trips all of our “horrible cyberpunk future” alarms, carefully put in place by everything from The Matrix to Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent. The former uses evil squid-bodied robots, the latter privileged human elites, but both works see humanity too distracted and preoccupied — by a full-scale replica of late-90s reality, or just sports on TV — to even be aware of the actions of those in charge.”

What will happen if the majority of humans give away their power by choosing to escape into virtual realities? More than likely, the elite will continue to tamper with and control the major working of the world. Or, at least, that’s one theory.
