Social media has been lit up lately regarding the news of Cecil the Lion’s death, who was poached illegally on July 1st by a dentist from America. Such an event has caused a number of species to enter the forefront of public debate, and the significant increase of attention has spurred action around the world.

In good timing with the Discovery Channel’s new documentary Racing Extinction (which will air this December), a number of endangered species were projected onto the Empire State building to raise awareness about the potential end they could face if more is not done to protect them.

Using 40 projectors, 160 striking images lit up the side of the Empire State Building, including Cecil the Lion (below), who was shot and killed earlier this month.

Lured out of a sanctuary in which he lived, he was shot with an arrow, tracked for 40 hours, and then finally put out of his misery with a rifle. The death prompted outrage among animal conservationists and has spurred even more conversation about the ethics of killing animals in general.

The photos of the display serve as a tribute to all species presently facing extinction, as well as those which have already been lost.
