Near the mouth of China’s Yangtze river, nearly 400 islands can be located. Known as the Shengsi archipelago, many of the islands have been abandoned since the economy off of China’s east coast transformed and widespread fishing practices died out.
While more than 100,000 fisherman venture to the islands every year, quite a few once-inhabited communities remain abandoned and overgrown. One, in particular, the Gougi island, has gained attention since Shanghai-based photographer Jane Qing captures some stunning photos of its lush nature.
Amusing Planet reports that the fishing community that once inhabited Gougi island has since left, leaving its buildings overgrown with green walls of moss, leaves, and thick vines.
