Houseplants are quickly becoming the current trend in home decorating, and it’s easy to see why. With the many benefits that houseplants can bring, people are turning to indoor plants to spruce up their living space, add some extra oxygen to the room, and include talking pieces to the main hangout areas. While succulents have been all-the-rage lately, probably because most of them are very low-maintenance, there are many other plants that you can look for if you’re searching for something that’s a bit less mainstream.

1. Trachyandra

These plants are native to eastern and southern Africa. While they are rather labor-intensive, the mesmerizing results make the care regimen worthwhile.

2. Crassula Umbella

No, that’s not an “umbrella,” although the foliage on this plant does resemble an inverted umbrella. This plant does have a fun name, as it is lovingly called the “Wine Cup” for obvious reasons. When in full bloom, the flowers reach just 6 inches, meaning you can have a compact, awesome plant to decorate any part of your home.

3. Euphorbia Obesa

This plant is particularly fun-looking and it’s also a succulent for those of you that don’t have the greatest green thumb. It’s often referred to as the “baseball plant” because of its orb-like shape and one of its many pros is that it’s thornless.

4. Euphorbia Caput-Medusae

This succulent is called “Medusa’s Head” because of its thorny tendrils and works great both indoors and outdoors.

5. Platycerium

As one of the plants that’s sure to be a talking piece, this plant grows on the wall and is called the “Staghorn Fern,” since it resembles the horns of a stag… Which you would also put on your wall.

6. Euphorbia Tirucalli

Another one in the euphorbia family, this plant also works well outside because it can grow to be huge (25 feet tall, to be exact). Its rich red/orange/pink hues are sure to brighten up any room, and not just because its nickname is “Firesticks.”

7. Haworthia Cooperi

These ones are especially crazy, as you can see. These fleshy leaves showcase the water absorption that this plant can handle and features pretty, vine-like streaks throughout.

8. Sedum Morganianum

Known as the “Donkey Tail,” this succulent often grows downward because the leaves can reach 24 inches. It’s perfect for hanging plants.

9. Corkscrew Grass

This one is pretty self-explanatory. As a succulent, and not actually intended for use as grass, this is great for landscaping or to be enjoyed indoors.

10. Gentiana Urnula

The way this plant grows has earned it the name of “Starfish Succulent” and is a favorite to many because it is low-maintenance and can be planted vertically for a variety of garden types or decor ideas.
